Dome of Soltaniyeh

Zanjan attractions, Iran attractions

The mausoleum of Oljaytu was constructed in 1302–12 in the city of Soltaniyeh, the capital of the Ilkhanid dynasty, which was founded by the Mongols.
One of the significant reasons for its popularity is in terms of height; The Dome of Soltaniyeh is known as the third most famous dome in the world after the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and Hagia Sophia mosque. Dome of Soltaniyeh is the tomb of Öljaitü which has been built under the command of Öljaitü, the king of the Mongols. During the construction process of the Dome of Soltaniyeh Öljaitü became a Muslim. He decided to move the grave of Imam Ali from Najaf to Soltaniyeh after visiting the shrine in Najaf. He faced the opposition of Shia scholars and made there as the tomb of himself. Finally, he used the soil of Najaf to construct the Dome of Soltaniyeh.
