Azadi Tawoer is one of the symbols of tehran which was called : Shahyad Tower" before revolution. Tehran Azadi Tower is located at the west of city at the middle of ground square. Visitors who fly domestically will catch a bird's-eye view of a memorable structure that can welcome to them before landing at Capital city of Iran, Tehran, Mehrabad international airport. Azadi tower means freedom tower and national independence, has an interesting story behind, as being the silent witness to Iran's major historical events.

History of Azadi Tower

In 1966, a 24-year-old architecture student, Hossein Amanat, a graduated man from Tehran University, won a competition which organized by Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, to design a building for celebrating the 2500th anniversary of founding of Persian Empire, Achaemenid Empire under Cyrus the Great. As Hossein Amanat describes his creation, Azadi Tower “starts from the ground and stretches to the sky”. This is how the architect saw the history and destination of Tehran. Now Azadi tower is on the list of top Tehran attractions.

This iconic landmark of Tehran which was famous as Shahyad tower ("Remembrance of Shahs") is made up 8,000 blocks of snow_white marble stone cutting into various geometric patterns. It stands on a 540,000 sq ft (50,000 sq meter) combines modern architecture with traditional Iranian influences, Per-Islamic and past-Islamic places at Ctesiphon with the pointed arches of the Islamic period as gate keeper of city. The Architecture of Azadi Tower is a combination of Achaemenid architecture, Sassanid architecture & Islamic architecture.

This lovely monument was witness of Iran's history while the monarchy of Pahlavi was overthrown in the 1979 revolution, which ushered in an Islamic Republic with Ayatollah Khomeini as supreme leader. 
Azadi Tower became an indispensable feature of the city landscape and later appeared on the 200 rials bill.
